Step by Step to Becoming a Delegate
At this point you really must get involved in your local county Republican monthly meetings! Each state will release their "rules" by Oct. 1st. Once that is done, the campaign will be putting together each state's process!
Ok folks, NOW is the time. We NEED Ron Paul delegates and I know all too well how confusing and daunting the process is. Believe me, it's no accident. The Reps and Dems are nothing more than clubs. They have club rules and leaders. They don't want just anyone coming off the street and becoming something important like a delegate. Therefore you must be diligent and learn what it takes. Here is a list of what I believe we MUST do to make this happen. I realize every state is different, so that means you will have to research your own state. But the list I am about to give you will get you started.
1. You MUST attend your local Republican meetings. Each County will likely have monthly meetings, maybe more. You MUST go! When you go, do NOT wear your Ron Paul gear. Keep that quiet. They are looking for loyal Republicans. You might find it difficult to attend these meetings because many of the leaders and members will be neo-cons. However, have some self discipline and shut up! lol! It is VITAL to becoming a Ron Paul delegate. Having a fruitless debate will do one thing and one thing only, get you kicked out and unable to become a delegate. Go to the website below and click on your state. Find the Rep party website, or, Google your state and Republican party. This site will list counties and announce meetings. ATTEND!
http://www.votesmart.org/mystate_government_resources.php
2. Sign up, pay the fee, and become a precinct captain. It cost $35 here in AR and I bet that is pretty standard IF there is a fee. Some states do not charge fees at all. Precinct captains do exactly what we are doing now....they organize supporters. The difference is, you'll be organizing people in your neighborhood who are Republicans to vote. This is the BEST way to become known within your county and among the leaders. They NEED precinct chairmen or captains....same thing different name. They say, "if we control precincts, we control elections." Now your precinct may be called a "ward" or "municipality" or something else. When you attend these meetings you will find out. If you do not, then at the end of the meeting they WILL open the floor for questions pertinent to the meeting and county. THAT is when you make your splash! Stand up, tell them you are passionate about the party, or this election, or getting rid of Obama, or what ever, and tell them that you want very much to help make this happen. Tell them you are new to this, and you just want to know HOW you can make that happen. Ask them if it is possible to become a precinct leader? They will be so excited that you did this that they will all want to meet you and get to know you. TRUST ME...they are desperate for people. The local level is very very small. I did exactly this and state reps and senators came and talked to me after the meeting. They NEED local leaders!
3. How do I KNOW that they WILL open the floor to questions? Because they ALL use the Roberts Rules of Order. This is a very confusing language. But basically, it is a technique used to organize meetings and to keep them flowing and to keep them from getting off task, as many meetings do. If you've held a meetup and had an agenda, you know what I mean. It's easy for someone to start talking or asking a question and telling their idea...and the entire thing gets derailed for several minutes. The Robert Rules of Order are used in frats and business meetings and other club meetings. Read over them, and become familiar with the process and the language. There is even a book for dummies that I am going to buy. :-) Locate your state Rep page and I am sure you will find the version of the Robert Rules listed there.
